What If Sound Could be Seen?

An art–science project where vibration becomes light through bioluminescent algae.

A LIVE INSTALLATION

Living Sounds is a living art–science project where sound becomes a physical force that touches life.

Using bioluminescent microalgae, the installation translates sound-induced vibration into light, revealing how sound moves through water and affects living systems beyond human perception.

Rooted in marine science and bioart, the project invites audiences to listen differently and reflect on the often invisible ways human activity resonates through non-human life.

Project RoadMap

First Working Prototype

November 2025 – February 2026

Development and testing of the first sound-responsive bioluminescent system.

Installation Development

March – July 2026

Design, refinement, and assembly of the full installation, integrating sound, light, and living systems.

Exhibition Period

August – December 2026

Public presentation of Living Sounds in exhibition and cultural spaces.

The origin

Living Sounds is created by an artist–researcher working at the intersection of biotechnology, sound, and art.

The artist is a doctoral researcher in microalgae biotechnology whose practice is grounded in hands-on work with living systems.

Alongside this research runs a long-standing engagement with sound and music, explored as physical phenomena — vibration, resonance, and rhythm — that move through bodies, water, and environments.
